State Senator Ben Nevers (District 12) came to
the Louisiana Senate from the House of Representatives, where he served from
1999 - 2003. The Bogalusa Democrat owns an electrical contracting business and
serves as deacon in his church. His prior service as a local school board member
provides a solid base for his current position as Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Education. His years of business experience give him a clear
understanding of the vital link between education and a healthy economy. For the
betterment of Senate District 12, Senator Nevers is also committed to advancing
the causes of agriculture, economic development, and health care.
Nevers is married to the former Barbara Ann Williams. They have 3 children and 6
grandchildren. He is a 1964 graduate of Bogalusa High School and a 1969 graduate
of Louisiana Technical College, Sullivan Campus. Nevers also served in the
United States Army from 1965 - 1971.
In addition to
his Senate committees, Senator Nevers also serves on the Louisiana Tuition
Trust Authority, the Louisiana High School Redesign Commission, the
Louisiana Early Childhood Science Team, the Blue Ribbon Commission for
Educational Excellence, the Education Commission of the States, the
Education Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference, the Senate
Select Committee on Vocational and Technical Education, the
Textbook/Media/Library Advisory Council, the Louisiana Educational
Assessment Testing Commission, the Louisiana State Reading Leadership Team,
the ALEC Education Task Force, the Louisiana Commission on Civic Education,
the Legislative Audit Advisory Council, the Deep Water Port Task Force, the
Hurricane Katrina Memorial Commission, the Joint Legislative Committee on
Capital Outlay, the Louisiana Dairy Producers Tax Credit/Refund Regulations
Committee, the Oversight of the Greater New Orleans Expressway
Commission, the Southern Regional Education Board’s Legislative Advisory
Council, and the TIMED Program Study Committee. Senator Nevers is also a
member of the Louisiana Northshore Legislative Delegation.
