Senator Julie Quinn - District 6

Chinese Drywall Information
Frequently Asked Questions
Updated: October 20, 2009

  • What do I need to do? It is imperative that you register with the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov and report your complaint.  We anticipate that President Obama will engage in the issue at 10,000 registered complaints.
  • It is important to register your complaint with the Louisiana Attorney General's office at www.ag.la.gov to Consumer Complaint section at “Consumer Complaints”. Or to call at 1-800-351-4889.

  • Make a claim with your homeowner’s insurance company.  If your claim is denied contact the Department of Insurance and register your complaint at 225-342-5900.

  • Contact you parish tax assessor for an appropriate reduction in property taxes.  If your property is in St. Tammany, you may go to www.stassessor.org.  Senator Quinn is awaiting a response from assessors in St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes.
  • How many homes are affected with CDW? It is estimated that 4,000-7,000 homes in Louisiana and 40,000 to 100,000 homes nationwide are affected by CDW.

  • Is there any government funding available for CDW?   Currently, $20,000,000 of Road Home money is allocated for "post-Katrina repairs".  Louisiana Recovery Authority Director Paul Rainwater, Senator A.G. Crowe and I are working toward getting that money freed up to be utilized for CDW remediation.  Additionally, Senator Gray-Evans amended her bill on almost the last day of the 2009 regular session allocating $5,000,000 of Road Home money for CDW remediation.  This total amount of $25,000,000 for CDW remediation must be approved by the federal government before we can implement a program to distribute the funds for CDW.  The federal government is working on a "testing protocol" to establish accepted standards for determining the existence of CDW in someone's home.  Once this testing protocol is established, we anticipate the federal government on approving the $25,000,000 for use in CDW remediation.

  • What are state legislators doing regarding CDW?  In the 2009 regular session, I introduced the single piece of legislation on this CDW issue.  Unfortunately, the bill failed to pass the Senate.  I urge each and every individual with CDW to contact all legislators with your thoughts on this issue.
