STATE SENATORS READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL

AMERICA'S LEGISLATORS BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK
                                       BEGINS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH

State senators are scheduled to visit with students and educators across Louisiana beginning Monday September 15, 2003, as part of the second annual America's Legislators Back to School project, sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislature (NCSL). The Louisiana lawmakers will join legislators across the country in a bi-partisan effort to give students an up-close look at what representative democracy is all about.  Legislators will also have the opportunity to observe what is happening in their local schools. This effort is part of NCSL's civic education initiative, the Trust for Representative Democracy, which is designed to engage young people and build their understanding and support of America's democratic institutions.

To view a schedule of which schools senators from your area will be attending, please visit http://senate.la.gov/Senators/BackToSchool/2003/schedule.asp. The schedule is updated from time to time, so check back often. You can also go to the Senate website at http://senate.la.gov/ and click on Back To School 2003. In addition to background information and the members' schedule, the Back To School website also includes sound cuts from Senate President John Hainkel and Education Committee Chairman Senator Jerry Theunissen. These actualities are also available on the SENATE LINE audio feed service. SENATE LINE can be accessed by dialing 1-800-272-3086 or 225-342-5384.

Thirty-six members of the Louisiana Senate are planning to participate in the America's Legislators Back to School project this month. Others may visit classrooms later in the school year when their schedule allows.

If you need additional information, please contact the Senate Communication Office at 225-342-9737. News media wishing to accompany senators on their classroom visits should check with the individual schools and individual members about such coverage.
