STATE SENATOR RON BEAN NAMED

NEW SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE

UNANIMOUSLY ELECTED

TO NO. 2 SENATE LEADERSHIP POST

 

District 38 State Senator Ron Bean(R-Shreveport) is the new Senate President Pro Tempore. The two term NorthwestLouisiana lawmaker, elected without opposition by his fellow senators, takes the numbertwo leadership position in the State Senate after former Senate President Pro TemporeDennis Bagneris left the state legislature to take on new responsibilities as a stateappeals court judge. It appears Bean is the first Republican to hold the pro tempore postsince the 1800's.

"I am delighted that my peers thought enough of me to vote for me," SenatePresident Pro Tempore Bean said. "I consider myself a moderate Republican who can getalong with folks on both sides of the fence. I hope I can contribute in a positive way tothe bi-partisan effort in the Senate to move the state forward."

The 60 year old retired U.S. Army pilot brings a wide range of experiences to theleadership position. He served two tours of duty during the Viet Nam War and was shot downseveral times. In the 1970's, Senator Bean was assigned to the White House as the pilotfor Army One, the president’s helicopter. He is the recipient of the PresidentialService Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and a long list of otherhonors for valor and outstanding service.

The Shreveport-Bossier native came to the State Senate after serving as a Police Jurorin Caddo Parish. He also served on the Shreveport Planning Commission and is active innumerous community and civic activities. He hopes to use his rich and varied experiencesin his new leadership role.

"I will devote my energies to helping the President of the Senate in overseeingthe operations of the Senate and in running the day by day activities. I hope that I canbring a cooperative spirit to the workings of the legislature that will help establish thecoalitions needed to accomplish good things for Louisiana," Senate President ProTempore Bean said. Most recently in the Senate, Senator Bean has served as chairman of theLegislative Audit Advisory Council, vice-chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee and amember of the Senate Environmental Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the SenateTransportation and Highway Committee.
